Thomas J. van Brakel, MD, PhD

Thomas van Brakel is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and specialized in thoracic aortic surgery, lung surgery and the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Thomas van Brakel performed his PhD training under supervision of profs Jos Maessen and Maurits Allessie in Maastricht, resulting in his thesis entitled "Epicardial Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation". He has experience with a number of different pre-clinical models of atrial remodeling and fibrillation, and aims to improve the understanding and treatment of this disorder through translational research. In addition, he is responsible for the clinical atrial fibrillation research performed at the Department of Cardiothoracic surgery, for which he collaborates with different departments in- and outside the LUMC. He is actively involved in our research projects by providing critical feedback and hands-on guidance in experimental surgical procedures.
